I think you're broadly right here - but it's worth reflecting that people can rise up to the challenges presented to them. The scale of the challenges will largely determine the drive people need to invest. It's hard to take people who haven't had to face a comparable level of hardship and expect a sudden change. It's like taking a house cat and expecting them to survive for long in a new environment.
To an extent many of us are living the lives our parents and ancestors hoped we would be living - lives without the hardships they endured.
Doesn't mean we can't drive ourselves harder - especially with the tools we have today - but I think the onus is finding a core mission that is worth rising up to.
