7 years ago, I called a friend to ask for advice.

I told him I was thinking about leaving my job to build something on my own. Asked him what he thought I should do.

He told me to stay. Said the market was uncertain. Said I should wait until I had more savings. Said starting a business was harder than it looked. Said most businesses fail in the first year.

I thanked him. Told him I’d think about it. Hung up feeling relieved.

Not because his advice was good. Because now if I stayed, it wasn’t entirely my decision. He’d told me to stay. So if staying turned out to be the wrong choice, it wasn’t completely my fault.

That’s what I was actually doing when I asked for advice. I wasn’t seeking information. I was outsourcing responsibility.
