David had been CFO for eight years when they found the expense report.
Three hundred dollars. A dinner in Boston billed as client entertainment that turned out to be personal. Nothing compared to the $200M in revenue he’d helped generate. A rounding error. A stupid mistake.
Two weeks later, his assistant mentioned that HR was auditing his last three years of expenses. A week after that, the board asked for his resignation. Six months after that, he still couldn’t get hired.
The expense wasn’t the problem. The rewrite was the problem.
