Think about the last person who made you feel genuinely good about yourself.

I don’t mean flattered. I don’t mean praised in a meeting because they needed something from you afterward. I mean someone who said something so specific, so unhurried, that you realized they’d actually been paying attention. To you. Not to what you could do for them.

You remember where you were standing. You remember their face. It was probably years ago.

That’s the thing about small deposits. They cost almost nothing to give and they stay with the person who receives them for years. A single sentence, said with actual attention, can rearrange how someone sees themselves for months. And the person who said it probably forgot about it by lunch.

I think about this a lot. The people I admire most aren’t the most talented or the most connected. They’re just the kind of people who consistently leave you a little better than they found you.
