A while back I read about a couple on LinkedIn who were making around a million dollars a year and still living paycheck to paycheck. When Anthony O’Neal came on the podcast, I brought them up, and he told me about someone earning sixteen million a year with about a hundred and thirteen thousand in savings. Anthony calls what they’re missing margin, the room between what comes in and what goes out, and his point was that income tells you how much someone makes, while margin tells you what they can build.
Time works the same way. Picture a week where every slot is taken: shifts or meetings, a few calls, your workouts, a dinner you said yes to a month ago, and a deadline on Thursday. Then your kid wakes up with a fever on Tuesday.
You cancel the 10am, which pushes your deliverable to Thursday, so you’re up late Wednesday finishing it, so you skip Thursday’s workout, and by Friday you’re snapping at your spouse over something that has nothing to do with any of it. Nothing big went wrong that week. A kid got a fever, and there was nowhere in the week for it to go.
